The film study is back and better than ever.
This week, The New York Times reported that the National Center for the Study of Men and Masculinity has created a website called The Films Study that offers “the most comprehensive, accessible database of men and masculinity study material ever published.”
On Monday, the Times also reported that a group of professors at the University of New Hampshire, along with a few former professors at colleges across the country, had formed a group called The Study of the Masculine Man.
“The study was designed as a way for men and women who had studied film studies for many years to better understand the nature and causes of gender and sexual violence in films,” the professors wrote in a statement.
“This group of men & women, who have all shared their personal experiences, hopes that this work will help them to better serve their communities and create a safer, more supportive, and more loving place for their daughters and sons to live.”
The study is a project of the National Institute of Mental Health, which, among other things, has been working to develop tools for educators to help them better understand how the film industry impacts men and boys.
But the study also aims to help men understand why they need to study the subject, as well as how they can become more masculine and contribute to society.
The new study comes at a time when men are increasingly under attack by feminists, who see the films industry as an instrument for their oppression.
Feminists have taken to calling film studies “the rape industry,” calling it “a system of rape that is perpetrated by powerful men and female academics and academics at the university level.”
For instance, feminist filmmaker and activist Erin Gloria Ryan recently released a documentary called A Rape on the University, which documented how “studies on film have been used to suppress critical voices on campus.”
In an essay for Salon, Ryan argued that film studies were “the worst thing to happen to women in American history.”
While the film studies study is being developed, a new report from the nonprofit Media Lab shows that more than 1.5 million American students were the subjects of sexual assault in 2014.
More broadly, the Center for Media Justice recently reported that “more than 4 million American college students are sexually assaulted each year, with over 3,000 reported rapes each year.”
