When Will we see the second of the two original films?
We will, at least for now, be seeing the first, The Lighthouse, which is also an adaptation of the novel by Neil Gaiman, about a group of friends who are trapped in the lighthouse.
The first film opened in December 2016 and grossed $1.9 billion worldwide.
(That was before the Oscars.)
The second film opened a year later and grosses $3.3 billion worldwide, and it’s currently in pre-production.
But it’s not clear when or if the two films will see a third film.
“The lighthouse was so good, I wanted to do another one,” co-director Joss Whedon said on the film’s official website.
“I love the character of Peter, and I wanted him to be in a second film.
I was like, I can’t believe it’s been eight years since we did this first one.
It’s been a year and a half since the last one.
So, I’m like, why can’t we do another.”
There are some differences in the original screenplay, which was written by Gaiman and is now owned by Warner Bros., and the second film’s.
Whedon wrote the first film, while Gaiman wrote the second.
The original script was much longer, which might make it a challenge to make a third movie that doesn’t overlap with the first two.
“We had a great script,” Whedon said.
“It was just so long and complicated, so much that I’m not sure it’s going to work.
I think the reason it was so long was that we knew the story that we were telling, and so the longer we talked, the more difficult it was to keep it straight.”
The first Lighthouse movie was released in August 2017, and was well received.
The second movie opened on July 28, 2018, and grossing $4.8 billion worldwide worldwide.
